1974 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible
Cadillac warned the buyers of these cars that they were not sports cars and, if they were driven in a "spirited" manner, they could expect to change the front tires on a monthly basis. These 5,000 pound, front wheel drive, softly sprung cars were built for one reason and one reason only: COMFORT! Moving this mass was Cadillac's famous 500 cubic inch (8.19 Liter) engine. Although bogged down with all of the emission equipment installed on the 1974 models, there was sufficient power to propel this beast to cruising speed in a respectable amount of time. There was an enormous amount or torque.
Bias ply tires and a self leveling rear suspension were standard as were the usual array of Cadillac's power accessories. Steel belted radials would have to wait one more year. Air bags and anti-lock brakes were an option. As one might suspect, gas mileage was a dismal 7 M.P.G. in the city and 14 on the highway IF you drove it conservatively. Gas was only .59 cents/gallon though and with a 28 gallon fuel tank, fill-up intervals were kept to a minimum.
